QR Code Not Scanning? 9 Fixes That Actually Work
Updated June 2026 · ~4 min read
A QR code that refuses to scan is almost always a fixable problem with the code itself, not the phone. Work through these in order.
1. Too little contrast
Cameras need dark modules on a light background. Light-grey-on-white or busy gradients confuse the scanner. Keep it dark on light.
2. Inverted colours
A light code on a dark background often fails. If you want a dark look, test thoroughly — many readers expect the standard polarity.
3. Printed too small
Below about 2 cm, many cameras give up. Enlarge it, and use an SVG so it stays sharp.
4. No quiet zone
QR codes need a clear margin around them. Text or graphics touching the edge break detection — leave breathing room.
5. Stretched or skewed
Resizing without keeping it square distorts the pattern. Always scale proportionally.
6. A logo that is too big
A centre logo covering too much data defeats error correction. Keep logos small and use level H. See adding a logo safely.
7. Blurry or low-resolution export
A stretched low-res PNG turns crisp squares into mush. Re-export at higher resolution or as SVG.
8. Glare or curved surface
Shiny laminate and bottles reflect light or bend the code. Use matte stock and flatter surfaces.
9. A dead destination
If it scans but the page fails, the link is broken — not the code. Confirm the URL works in a browser. Static codes from our URL to QR Code tool encode the link directly, so there is no redirect to expire.
