SVG vs PNG vs PDF: Which QR Code Format Should You Download?

When you download a QR code you usually get a choice of formats. They are not interchangeable — picking the right one is the difference between a razor-sharp print and a blurry mess.

SVG — best for printing

SVG is a vector format: the code is described by maths, not pixels, so it stays perfectly sharp at any size — a business card or a billboard. Choose SVG whenever the code will be printed or resized.

PNG — best for screens and the web

PNG is a raster (pixel) image with a crisp transparent background. It is ideal for websites, slides, emails, and social posts. Export it at a generous size; a tiny PNG blown up will pixelate.

JPG — usually avoid for QR codes

JPG compression adds fuzzy artefacts around hard edges, which is exactly what a QR code is made of. It also cannot do transparency. Prefer PNG over JPG for codes.

PDF — best for sending to a printer

PDF wraps a vector code in a print-ready document, handy for handing to a print shop or dropping into a layout. Quality matches SVG.
