Do QR Codes Expire? The Honest Answer
Updated June 2026 · ~4 min read
Short answer: a static QR code never expires. A dynamic one can stop working if the service behind it shuts down or the plan lapses. Here is what that means for you.
Why static codes last forever
A static QR code has your link or text encoded directly into the black-and-white pattern. There is no server, no account, and nothing to renew. As long as the website or content it points to still exists, the code works — whether that is next week or in ten years.
Why some codes "expire"
If you have seen a QR code stop working, it was almost certainly a dynamic code. Dynamic codes route through a short link controlled by a provider. If that provider's free trial ends, the plan is cancelled, or the company goes out of business, the redirect breaks and the code fails — even though the pattern is physically fine.
How to make sure yours never expires
- Use a static code whenever your destination is stable.
- Keep the destination link alive (do not delete the page or move the PDF without a redirect).
- Avoid "free" dynamic generators that quietly switch off codes after a trial.
Every generator on QRForge produces static codes by default — so the codes you download here do not expire, ever.
